Wednesday March 6th 2024 at Southeast Technical College!
There have been many studies completed that show women are historically underrepresented in almost all of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related fields. While there are many theories as to why this occurs, no conclusions have been reached.
Statistics show that girls score high in math and science classes during early school years. While in high school, their scores remain high, they often choose not to take optional math and science classes. Even fewer go on to earn college degrees or pursue jobs in these traditionally male dominated areas.
Women In Science – Sioux Falls, however, is breaking the social stigma. Our job is to stimulate the interest in STEM careers by connecting the girls with local women already working in these professions. By providing contacts with potential mentors, we encouraged the young women to explore the possibilities available to them and to continue taking the math and science classes necessary to prepare them for careers in STEM fields.
